Transport

Over the years, there have been many equal pay claims against ferry companies, bus operators, railways, haulage/freight companies and airlines.

In the transport sector, women generally tend not to do jobs such as driving, service or maintenance of heavy machinery, leaving that to their male colleagues. Although the work performed by workers in male dominated job roles may appear very different to the female dominated work, it may be of equal value to the company. If one group of workers (usually the men) is paid more than the other group, then the underpaid employees have a right to bring an equal pay claim.

The Asda and Sainsbury's equal pay claims offer a good illustration of the principle. There, the predominantly female group of shop assistants is comparing itself to the largely male group of warehouse workers. Their work is of equal value because both jobs involve manual lifting and the required skill-set is essentially the same.

Parts of the transport sector, such as the railways which were privatised in the 1990s, were subject to complex pay arrangements which date back long before privatisation.  Often those pay arrangements were discriminatory against women and the successor companies, such as the various train and freight operating companies, have inherited these arrangements. This makes it likely that workers, and in particular female workers, in the transport sector have equal pay claims.

Please get in touch if you work in the transport industry and you think you may have a claim.
